Preheat vs. No Preheat Thermal Plates

Preheat Technology

Write-the-image

With Horsell DITP preheat thermal plates, the ink-receptive, sensitised coating is designed to dissolve in the developer. The printing image is written by an infrared laser that initiates a chemical change in the coating, causing image areas to become resistant to the developer, press chemicals and wear.

ADVANTAGES

Ultra-high resolution

Wide processing latitude

Robust stability and run length on press

Coating can be removed from the entire non-image area, regardless of platesetter clamping system

DISADVANTAGES

Requires preheat step before processing

Yellow safelight environment preferred

Non Preheat Technology

Write-the-background

In Horsell Electra Excel write-the-background no preheat technology, the infrared laser initiates a change in the coating that causes the non-image areas to dissolve. Although the image is slightly less durable than preheat thermal plate images, with post-baking, no-preheat plates become almost as durable as post-baked preheat thermal plates.

ADVANTAGES

Preheat step not required

Can typically be handled in white light

Can be post-baked for additional wear and durability

DISADVANTAGES

Narrower processing latitude

Ink-receptive coating cannot be removed from areas under platesetter clamps

Shorter shelf-life
